"IN DA OUD", first title of the original EP of Joy Squander is a real treasure made of condensed rhythms which sound like the soundtrack of an adventure movie. The onomatopoeic « BANG ! away to Mars » tells us about nothing more than the conquest of the Space by this audacious group, who isn’t afraid about creating explosive sound mix. The oud, ancient Berber instrument, invites itself in the hip-hop universe and the title is a wink to this twinning. Joy Squander makes us travelling through tribal ceremonies, crazy sequences, like in K2000, and everything is accompanied by uppercuts, interrogations, scratches and hellish rhythms.
Be ready, “IN DA OUD” is going to set fire on your dance floor till the final Big “BANG” !
"HUNTING GROUND” is a great echo to the first EP folder of Joy Squander. From the first notes you will enter the world of reindeers, marmots, dinosaurs and others wilds animals where the violin and the harpsichord melodies tell us about a kind of baroque hunting. The side B is more old school hip-hop: a mysterious and timeless piece.

On espérait bien secrètement que ces deux-là reprennent un jour du service ensemble. Après avoir sévi en trio dans L'entourLoOp! (en compagnie de KhezR) ou en collectif dans Picturing Sound, il y a quelques années, Ptit Fat et DJ Raincut s'essaient au duo. Association rêvée entre deux amoureux des platines vinyles, l'un DJ-producteur et collectionneur sans oeillères, l'autre scratcheur fou et roi du turntablism.
Annoncé par un premier morceau à l'ambiance assez smooth et jazzy ("Never seen on TV"), l'ambitieux projet Joy Squander va s'échelonner sur quatre saisons, pour quatre 45-tours possédant chacun sa propre identité visuelle et musicale.
Le premier ep Hiver 2013, et sa jolie pochette ornée d'un T-Rex et d'un caribou sur fond de monts enneigés, amorce la tétralogie par un versant abstract hip hop délicieusement old-school. On attaque tout schuss la piste A ("In da oud") par une intro cuivrée solennelle, suivie d'une ligne de oud à suspense sur laquelle se glissent vocaux cutés et interludes scratchés. On pense à des Chemical Brothers inspirés qui auraient signé la BO d'un Tarantino en plein désert marocain. La face B ("Hunting ground"), plus classique, promène son mid-tempo entre samples de violons et de clavecins pour un bel exercice de hip hop instrumental façon DJ Shadow.
En attendant le second acte printanier et un coffret regroupant les quatre ep pour décembre, voici déjà une mise en bouche de premier choix.
